Community Outreach on the Drought
To help educate the community on the drought and conservation techniques, Manhattan Beach is partnering with West Basin and Metropolitan Water District to promote rebates, incentives and free informative webinars. Where Does Our Water Come From?
The City of Manhattan Beach acquires its drinking water through City owned wells, West Basin Municipal Water District and Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. These agencies provide water conservation tours, workshops and school outreach programs. These programs are tailored to providing information and training that assists the general public and educators in understanding the severity of the current drought and the need for sustained personal action that can be taken to conserve water. West Basin Municipal Water District (WB MWD)
- Workshops – West Basin presents a class series titled "Know Your H2O". These classes covers the basics of water and explores water issues at the local level, provides resources on community programs, and concludes with solutions to future water challenges. Additionally, West Basin offers landscaping classes for individuals who are replacing their lawns with more water efficient options.
- School Programs – West Basin offers a wide and varied range of water education programs and activities that cater to elementary through high school students, in addition to providing education materials to educators.
Metropolitan Water District (MWD)
- Workshops- MWD has a variety of resources for all different age groups to learn about California's water supply, distribution systems and water quality through virtual and hands on activities. Classes also teach the significance of personal responsibility and the importance of conserving water. MWD additionally offers online field trips, which include Diamond Valley Lake and the Regional Recycled Water Advanced Purification Center.
The Water Replenishment District (WRD) has been the steward of groundwater for southern Los Angeles County since 1959. WRD’s service area covers a 420-square-mile region of southern Los Angeles County. The 43 cities in the service area, which includes South Bay cities, use about 220,000 acre-feet (72 billion gallons) of groundwater annually which accounts for nearly half of the region’s water supply needs.
WRD ensures that a reliable supply of high-quality groundwater is available through replenishment with recycled water and stormwater capture. WRD is also responsible for monitoring and testing groundwater throughout the region. Learn More about the WRD at https://www.wrd.org/mission-and-history.
The West Basin Municipal Water District mission is to provide a safe and reliable supply of high-quality water to the communities they serve. West Basin meets this mission by importing water, producing recycled water for customers, offering water use efficiency programs to residents, and educating students.
