The Teen Center is located in the Manhattan Heights Community Center which is across Manhattan Beach Boulevard from Polliwog Park and within easy walking distance from Manhattan Beach Middle School. There are three programs offered by the Teen Center: School Year Program, Vacation Programs, and Summer Camp. These programs are designed especially for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teens who reside in the City of Manhattan Beach, attend school in the City of Manhattan Beach, or whose parents/guardians work in the City of Manhattan Beach. Although it is a drop-in, non-custodial program, participants are required to sign in and out upon arrival and departure.
The Teen Center consists of two adjoining rooms in the community center which are set aside exclusively for teen activities. The rooms, which are designed primarily by the teens themselves, contain all types of equipment and furniture that help teens wind down after school in a supportive and friendly atmosphere. There are couches to lounge on; a sound system, TVs and video games for entertainment; and pool tables, table tennis, foosball, soccer and air hockey for fun and excitement. Other equipment includes dozens of games and loads of arts and crafts supplies. Outdoor play equipment is also available, as well as access to the adjacent rock climbing wall. The environment is conducive to self expression and individuality and provides teens with understanding and caring guidance.
Team and confidence building games are an important element of the Teen Center. The games include traditional sports such as soccer and basketball and new games where playing is more important than winning. Others include games of challenge which encourage group cooperation and creativity.
