Los Angeles International Airport Community Noise Roundtable

Post Date:01/06/2015 2:48 PM
The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Community Noise Roundtable was created in September 2000 and is intended to reduce and mitigate the adverse noise impacts that the users of LAX create on the surrounding communities and their Environs.

The Roundtable will be holding upcoming meetings to address resident's concerns regarding noise issues from low flying aircraft arriving and departing from LAX. The Roundtable meetings are scheduled on the 2nd Wednesday of every odd-numbered month, and meeting dates in 2015 include January 14, March 11, May 13, July 8, September 9, and November 10. All meetings start at 7:00 PM. More information about the Roundtable is available online at the Community Noise Roundtable website.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently performing a test of expanded hours for the LOOP Departure. The FAA is conducting this test to evaluate the feasibility of operating the existing LOOP departure procedure during the hours of 9:00 PM to midnight. Currently, the LOOP procedure is only allowed between 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM. This is not a new procedure, but rather a 3-hour extension of the use of the existing procedure. The FAA has issued a Categorical Exclusion to perform this 6-month test only. Should the FAA decide to implement this as a permanent change, they will need to conduct a separate environmental review and analysis.

The LOOP departure procedure directs aircraft heading to eastern destinations to depart LAX westbound over the ocean and then circle/loop back over the top of the LAX Very High Frequency Omni-directional Range (located at the southwest corner of the airport) at a minimum altitude of 10,000 ft. During the 6-month (September 1, 2014 to February 28, 2015) test period, the FAA established a minimum altitude of 12,000 ft. for aircraft operating the LOOP procedure between 9:00 PM and midnight to help alleviate any potential noise impacts.

Please direct any comments or concerns you have related to the Federal Aviation Administration’s testing of the expanded hours of the LOOP departure procedure to:
